27/02/2006 Villa Miseria, the Argentinian favelas
In Argentina, tens of thousands of people live in the so called "villas miseria" (misery cities). Townships of precarious constructions with a muddy floor, built-up from misery and necessity. The situation of many of these villas, is standardized, given the institutional incapacity to confront the problematic issue of housing. Houses and rooms are rented, bought and sold, small stores, and a very fluid local life, could be the reflection of any of theses districts. But between precarious workers and families without resources, are hiding drug dealers, thieves and corrupted policemen that seed the streets of dangers. The villa nº 20, or Lugano villa, is one of the many existing places of that kind in the province of Buenos Aires.

07/02/2006 Down the Potosi mines
This is a grievous place. These conditions are worse then the days when the Spanish forced Indians to work these mines in the 18th century. These days there is less fresh air as there are no vertical air shafts.

07/02/2006 Alasitas fair in La Paz
Every year in La Paz, from the end of January, a meeting takes place, a mixture of religious fervor and popular beliefs at the Alasitas fair – aymara word for “buy me”.
On a multitude of stalls, along narrow streets, most objects used in daily life are displayed including miniatures created by local artisans, whose craftsmanship is revealed in the incredible attention to detail.
Each small object represents a dream and tradition tells that whoever buys a miniature will see his dream come true the following year.
Amongst those who form this frenetic throng of people at the Alasitas fair, many nurture dreams of building their own home, and make a purchase of a miniature cement bag and pick that fits into the palm of their hand.
Others who dream of traveling, will go for a passport and a plane ticket as tiny as a stamp.

06/02/2006 Buenos Aires: the story of "cartoneros"
A daily sight in Buenos Aires around dusk are the legions of cartoneros--the poor, often foreign (Bolivia, Paraguay) families that come into the city center and residential neighborhoods in order to pick through trash for cardboard (carton), paper, plastic and glass. From the outskirts they often enter via the tren blanco (the "white train," a commuter train stripped of seats for this purpose), while those who live in the villas miserias (misery villages) pay a peso or so for a crew boss with a pickup to drive them.
